The colour symbolism of Five Nights At Freddy's

Updated: Jun 4, 2023

FNAF colour theory infographic

Colour has always played an important role in the symbolism of Five Nights at Freddy's (Purple, for example) but it is even more so in Security Breach. In particular, it helps visually tell us more about each of the characters' motivations and personality.

The games aren't very forthcoming in their signposting of what each colour means. However, if you look through the character designs in the Original Character Encyclopedia (especially the Special Delivery designs) and at the colour use throughout the pizzaplex, clear themes start to emerge. Why else would the colour of hats, bowties and markings vary between characters and animatronic iterations? No, the colour choice is a deliberate and consistent choice.

Here are my best estimations:

Purple - Represents the greater good and 'game-playing', royalty, ambition, mystery, magic

Pale Blue - Control, power, calm (best clue is the use of the colour on lightning bolts on the charging pods)

Red - Danger or caution

Pink - Love, compassion, innocence

Green - This is one I'm not sure of - may represent new beginnings/growth, nature or envy

Orange - Passion, creativity, deceit, danger

Yellow - Sunshine, optimism, friendship, danger

White - Purity, innocence, naivety

How does this impact the games, for example? Well, Glamrock Freddy has pale blue markings (a lightning bolt and a face mask) with a red outline. This suggests he is powerful and in control but dangerous. This is in addition to the mask marking, which is typically associated with deceit - something echoed by his overall orange colouring.

All character designs can be read this way. Future posts will reference this concept so stay tuned!
